Outdoor Trade Show

2006 til present

Following the success of organising The Tent Show at Stoneleigh, MCS was approached to work in conjunction with a group of key outdoor equipment suppliers on the concept of launching a trade show for the outdoor industry.

It was suggested that the show should take place in the traditional autumn slot with the dual purpose of allowing suppliers the opportunity to showcase the following season’s ranges as well as offering short term ordering facilities for pre-Christmas delivery.

The Brief
As this was a new concept, MCS’s brief was largely self-driven, reporting to a small management group of representatives from the founding companies for direction and guidance. MCS’s brief involved the overall launch from concept to reality of the Outdoor Trade Show with responsibility for all aspects of organisation, implementation and marketing.

This involved the following actions:

• Development of a corporate identity
• Research and negotiation of contract terms with a suitable venue
• Selling of stand space to prospective exhibitors
• Research and appointment of sub-contractors and subsequent liaison
• Marketing literature for visitors and exhibitors
• On-site management

As well as organising and managing the show, MCS plans awards and mini events within the show to further engage with exhibitors and visitors, making the experience as interactive and productive as possible for all involved.
OTS Novel Awards
The OTS Novel Awards give exhibitors the opportunity to submit their latest product innovations to various categories to be judged by industry experts. The awards are then presented by a well-known personality in the industry sector.
UK Outdoor Industry Awards
Launched in 2015, the UK Outdoor Industry Awards replace the existing OTS Novel Awards, and encompass the whole outdoor industry, creating the ultimate outdoor awards with a combination of trade and consumer elements. All products entered for the UK Outdoor Industry Awards are initially showcased at OTS, where a panel of expert judges select finalists from each category. The finalists in each of the ten categories will then be displayed for consumers to see and vote for their favourite products at The Telegraph Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show. Finally, the winners of each category will be officially announced during the OIA Conference.
Since its launch in 2006, the Outdoor Trade Show has gained significant momentum, attracting over 11,900 visitors over the 10 years.

2006 – One exhibition hall of 3,100 sqm, 46 exhibitors, 621 visitors
2007 – Moved to larger exhibition hall of 4,500sqm, 86 exhibitors, 888 visitors
2008 – Increased visitor attendance to 1096
2009 – Tenancy of two exhibition halls, 105 exhibitors and 1269 visitors
2010 – Increase to 120 exhibitors and 1427 visitors
2011- 12% increase in exhibitor attendance to 136
2012 – Slight increase in visitors’ attendance to 1294
2013- Increase to 133 exhibitors and increase in visitor attendance to 1392
2014- Further increase in visitors to 1399
2015- Record number of 25 outdoor exhibitors
The Brief
MCS was tasked with bringing the EOS to the UK in 2015. Working closely with the OIA and the EOG, MCS’s brief was to plan and deliver an engaging and topical conference for around 300 senior executives from across Europe and beyond, from concept to completion. MCS’s role included; researching and selecting a host city and venue, administration and reporting, sponsorship negotiation and recruitment, marketing, promotion, PR and communication, budgeting and financial control, delegate support and liaison, speaker liaison and coordination of activities and events taking place in and around the Summit.

In addition to the main Summit proceedings, MCS also organised and managed two social events, including a formal gala dinner hosted in Sheffield Cathedral for all delegates.
The EOS 2015 was a huge success and attracted 315 delegates; comprising 20 different nationalities, and pulled in the support of 15 sponsors from the across the industry, including big brands such as W.L Gore & Associates, ISPO and Berghaus. It also obtained crucial support from 13 key publications from across Europe and 9 European national associations.

Following the success of the EOS 2015, MCS was brought back on board to help organise and manage the EOS 2016, which successfully took place at the end of September in Barcelona, and is now looking forward to an equally successful EOS 2017 in Italy.

The European Outdoor Summit

Having a strong track record in organising and managing events in the outdoors sector; the Stoneleigh Tent Show, the Outdoor Trade Show, the OIA Conference and the Crocs Store Opening, MCS was appointed to organise and run the European Outdoor Summit (EOS) 2015, which took place in Sheffield, on behalf of the UK Outdoor Industries Association (OIA).

The EOS was founded by the European Outdoor Group (EOG) in 2013 and each year brings together senior executives from the European outdoor industry to explore the major issues facing the sector. The Summit moves to different locations in Europe and so far has been held in Sweden, Germany, the UK and in 2016 was held in Barcelona, Spain. The event is managed by the EOG in partnership with a host organisation in each country.

Crocs London Store Opening

MCS launched the unique range of Crocs footwear in the UK in 2006. The success story of the brand continued and on the 18th of October 2007 Crocs opened its first UK store which was located in London’s trendy Neal Street in Covent Garden.

The Brief
The brief to MCS was to organise the launch of the store. This not only involved press relations, but also being in control of the whole management of the day and the pre-event and post-event promotion:

Come up with a stunt idea to encourage visits to the show

• Advertising campaign
• Pre-show invitations
• Promotional opportunities

Businesses aiming to communicate in specialist markets require specialist expertise. When asked by those who need to address the outdoor sector we always recommend that they look to a PR agency that can demonstrate a track record built upon serving the outdoor market. And MCS’ track record of excellence is the longest and arguably the most distinguished in an industry that is blessed with some good PR suppliers.

Covering outdoor equipment for national consumer magazines means dealing with many different brands – hundreds, even – and that can be a frustrating process. MCS simplifies that task, providing me with exactly what I need in an efficient, professional yet friendly manner. The staff there have a keen understanding of my requirements as a writer, and of what their client needs in terms of getting their product out there. In the world of outdoor PR, few companies come close to the quality of service provided by MCS.
